Great news for the bioeconomy and producers of the Chiquitano dry forest!
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published its technical report under Article 14 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, confirming that roasted seeds of Dipteryx alata (commonly known as chiquitana almond or baru) can now be marketed in the European Union as a traditional food.
This opens up a major international market opportunity for a native species that represents much more than just a food:
🌳 Supports forest conservation
👩🌾 Generates income for Indigenous and rural communities
🌎 Contributes to climate change mitigation

The chiquitana almond is now positioned as a cornerstone of the bioeconomy in Bolivia's Chiquitanía and Brazil’s Cerrado.
